Heterophoria, commonly called phoria, is a latent eye misalignment that becomes apparent only when binocular fusion is disrupted. Unlike strabismus (tropia), where the misalignment is always visible, phorias are controlled by the brain's fusion mechanism. When this compensation breaks down (decompensated heterophoria), patients experience eye strain, headaches, double vision, and difficulty with reading and concentration.
