What EyeMed Covers

  • Annual comprehensive eye exam
  • Prescription eyeglass lenses — single vision, bifocal, progressive
  • Frame allowance (varies by plan: Insight, Access, or custom)
  • Contact lens fitting and evaluation
  • Contact lens allowance (conventional or disposable)
  • Lens add-ons — anti-reflective, scratch-resistant, UV coating

What's Not Covered

  • Medical eye conditions — these bill to your medical insurance (Blue Shield, Aetna, etc.)
  • Cosmetic procedures and non-prescription eyewear
  • Ortho-K, specialty scleral lenses (medical billing path)

Vision Insurance vs. Medical Insurance for Eye Care

EyeMed is a vision plan — it covers routine eye exams, glasses, and contacts for healthy eyes. If we discover a medical condition during your exam (dry eye, glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic eye disease), that portion is billed to your medical insurance, not EyeMed.

Many patients have both a vision plan and medical insurance. We bill the appropriate plan based on what we find during your visit.

Costs & Copays

EyeMed copays vary by plan tier. Typical exam copay: $10–$25. Materials copay: $0–$25 for in-network lenses. Frame allowance typically $100–$200. We verify your specific benefits before your appointment.

Benefit Frequency: Every 12 months for exams; lenses every 12 months; frames every 24 months (standard).
Materials Allowance: Frame allowance $100–$200 depending on your employer plan (Insight vs Access networks). Some plans offer extra savings at specific retail chains, but independent practices like ours often have a wider frame selection and personalized fitting.

Coverage varies by plan — call to verify your specific benefits before your visit.

EyeMed FAQs

What is the difference between EyeMed Insight and Access networks?

EyeMed offers different network tiers set by your employer. The Insight network and Access network may have different copays and allowance amounts. We participate in both — call us with your member ID and we will confirm which tier applies to your plan.

Is EyeMed the same as using my medical insurance for an eye exam?

No. EyeMed is a vision plan that covers routine eye care — annual exams, glasses, and contacts. If you have a medical eye condition like dry eye, glaucoma, or diabetic eye disease, that visit is billed to your medical insurance. You may have both a vision plan and medical insurance — we can bill the appropriate one.

Why choose a private practice over a retail chain with EyeMed?

At a private practice, you get a comprehensive medical eye exam — not just a glasses check. Dr. Bonakdar evaluates your full eye health, screens for conditions like glaucoma and macular degeneration, and provides personalized recommendations. Our optical has premium brands and expert fitting that retail chains cannot match.

Can my whole family use EyeMed here?

Yes. We see patients of all ages — from pediatric eye exams through senior care. Each family member covered under your EyeMed plan can use their individual benefits at our office.

Can I use EyeMed for contact lenses?

Yes. EyeMed covers a contact lens fitting evaluation and a materials allowance toward your lenses, in lieu of the glasses benefit. Conventional (reusable) and disposable lens fittings are both covered, though the fitting fee is billed separately from your materials allowance — a fitting is a distinct clinical evaluation from picking out frames. We verify your specific contact lens allowance before your visit.
