A comprehensive eye exam at EyeCare Center of Orange County checks both how well you see and how healthy your eyes are. Dr. Alexander Bonakdar, O.D., measures your prescription, your eye pressure, the front of the eye under the slit lamp, and the retina and optic nerve, by dilation or with digital imaging. Our office is at 801 N Tustin Ave Ste 404, Santa Ana, CA 92705. Many eye diseases have no symptoms until damage is done. Glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration are found on a routine exam, not by how your vision feels. An exam costs $150–$350 without insurance, or a $10–$25 copay with most vision plans, and same-week appointments are available.

Comprehensive Eye Exam FAQs for Orange County Patients

How much does an eye exam cost without insurance?+

A comprehensive eye exam at our Santa Ana office costs $150–$350 without insurance: $150–$200 for a routine exam with refraction, $250–$350 when OCT retinal imaging is included. FSA and HSA funds apply. We give you an estimate before your visit.

Is an eye exam covered by insurance?+

Vision plans (VSP, EyeMed, Davis Vision, Spectera, MES, Superior Vision) cover a routine exam for a $10–$25 copay. Medical plans (Blue Shield, Aetna, United Healthcare, Cigna, Medicare, Anthem) cover the exam when there is a medical diagnosis such as diabetes, glaucoma or dry eye. Medicare Part B does not cover a routine glasses exam. Call (949) 323-3600 to verify your plan.

How long does an eye exam take, and will my eyes be dilated?+

About 45–60 minutes. Dilation gives the most thorough retinal view and blurs near vision for 2–4 hours; digital retinal imaging is an alternative in many cases. Bring sunglasses.

Can I get an eye exam today?+

Routine exams are by appointment, and same-week slots are usually available. For an urgent eye problem, call first. Same-day slots are often available. Call (949) 323-3600 for today's availability.

Do you do a color vision test?+

Children's exams include a color vision check. For a quantitative result for aviation, law enforcement or military applications we offer the Rabin Cone Contrast Test on a separate visit.

When should a child have a first eye exam?+

The American Optometric Association recommends 6 months, age 3, before kindergarten, then yearly through school. A school screening only checks the distance chart and misses farsightedness, astigmatism and eye-teaming problems.
