What is Ocular Cicatricial Pemphigoid?

Ocular cicatricial pemphigoid (OCP), also called mucous membrane pemphigoid, is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes progressive scarring of the conjunctiva (the clear membrane lining the inner eyelids and covering the white of the eye). The scarring leads to symblepharon (adhesions), fornix shortening, trichiasis (inward-turning lashes), dry eye, and eventual corneal opacification if untreated. Scleral lenses can provide both vision correction and corneal protection in patients with stable disease, maintaining a hydrated ocular surface over scarred tissue.

At EyeCare Center of Orange County, we specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of ocular cicatricial pemphigoid. Our experienced optometrists use state-of-the-art technology to provide comprehensive care and help preserve your vision.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ocular cicatricial pemphigoid?

OCP is a chronic autoimmune disease where the body's immune system attacks the conjunctiva, causing progressive scarring. Without treatment, the scarring can shrink the conjunctival fornices, turn eyelashes inward, damage the cornea, and lead to vision loss. Early diagnosis and immunosuppressive therapy are critical.

Does insurance cover Ocular Cicatricial Pemphigoid treatment?

Most vision and medical insurance plans cover diagnostic exams and medically necessary treatments. We accept most major insurance plans and can help verify your coverage before treatment.
