What is Pellucid Marginal Degeneration?

Pellucid marginal degeneration (PMD) is a progressive corneal thinning disorder where the inferior peripheral cornea thins in a band pattern, causing the cornea above to protrude forward. Unlike keratoconus, which thins at the apex, PMD thins at the periphery. This creates a characteristic 'against-the-rule' or oblique astigmatism that is very difficult to correct with glasses or standard contact lenses. Scleral lenses are often the best non-surgical solution, vaulting over the entire irregular surface to provide clear, stable vision.

At EyeCare Center of Orange County, we specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of pellucid marginal degeneration. Our experienced optometrists use state-of-the-art technology to provide comprehensive care and help preserve your vision.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is pellucid marginal degeneration different from keratoconus?

Keratoconus thins at the central or paracentral cornea (the apex), while PMD thins at the inferior periphery in a crescent-shaped band. PMD produces a different topographic pattern and often requires a different scleral lens design than keratoconus.

Can scleral lenses correct vision with PMD?

Yes. Scleral lenses vault over the entire irregular cornea, creating a smooth optical surface regardless of where the thinning occurs. Most PMD patients achieve excellent vision with properly fitted scleral lenses.

Does insurance cover Pellucid Marginal Degeneration treatment?

Most vision and medical insurance plans cover diagnostic exams and medically necessary treatments. We accept most major insurance plans and can help verify your coverage before treatment.
