What VSP (Vision Service Plan) Covers

  • WellVision Exam — one comprehensive eye exam every 12 months
  • Prescription eyeglass lenses (single vision, bifocal, or progressive)
  • Frame allowance (amount varies by plan tier)
  • Contact lens allowance (in lieu of glasses benefit)
  • Lens enhancements — anti-reflective coating, photochromic lenses, blue-light filter
  • Diabetic EyeCare Plus program for members with diabetes

What's Not Covered

  • Medical eye conditions — dry eye, glaucoma, cataracts bill to your medical insurance, not VSP
  • Second pair of glasses within the same benefit period
  • Non-prescription sunglasses (unless using frame allowance)
  • Cosmetic procedures (LASIK, PRK) — though VSP offers discounts through partner networks

Vision Insurance vs. Medical Insurance for Eye Care

VSP (Vision Service Plan) is a vision plan — it covers routine eye exams, glasses, and contacts for healthy eyes. If we discover a medical condition during your exam (dry eye, glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic eye disease), that portion is billed to your medical insurance, not VSP (Vision Service Plan).

Many patients have both a vision plan and medical insurance. We bill the appropriate plan based on what we find during your visit.

Costs & Copays

Typical VSP copays: $15–$25 for the exam, $0–$25 for lenses. Your specific copay depends on your employer plan tier. We verify exact amounts before your visit.

Benefit Frequency: Every 12 months for a comprehensive exam; lenses every 12 months; frames every 24 months (standard plans).
Materials Allowance: Frame allowance typically $130–$200 depending on plan. Contact lens allowance typically $130–$200 in lieu of glasses. Some plans include an additional Costco/Walmart tier.

Coverage varies by plan — call to verify your specific benefits before your visit.

VSP (Vision Service Plan) FAQs

Can I use VSP for contact lenses instead of glasses?

Yes. VSP offers a contact lens allowance in lieu of the glasses benefit. The allowance covers the fitting exam and a set dollar amount toward contact lenses. If you want contacts AND glasses, the glasses come at the out-of-network rate after using your contact lens benefit.

Does VSP cover specialty contact lenses like scleral lenses?

Standard VSP plans cover routine soft contact lens fittings. Medically necessary specialty lenses — scleral lenses, custom toric, or RGP lenses for keratoconus — are typically billed to your medical insurance, not VSP. We handle both billing paths.

What if I also have medical eye insurance like Blue Shield?

Vision and medical insurance serve different purposes. VSP covers routine exams and eyewear. If we discover a medical condition (dry eye, glaucoma, cataracts) during your exam, that portion bills to your medical plan. You cannot use both for the same visit, but your VSP glasses benefit remains available for a separate routine visit.

Can I use VSP at any location?

VSP benefits are maximized at in-network providers like our office. Out-of-network providers offer reduced reimbursement. We are a full in-network VSP provider in Santa Ana, serving all of Orange County.

Do kids' exams use the same VSP benefit?

Yes, children covered under your VSP family plan receive the same exam and materials benefits. For myopia management services like Ortho-K or Stellest lenses, the fitting is a medical service and may bill differently — ask us to check both vision and medical coverage.
