At Eyecare Center of Orange County, Dr. Alexander Bonakdar has cared for patients for more than three decades. Trained at Bascom Palmer, board certified, and trusted by more than ten thousand Orange County patients since nineteen ninety one.
Tiny Demodex mites live in human skin, normally harmlessly. In some eyelids they overgrow at the lash roots, and the lids pay for it, itching, redness, crusting, and lashes that keep misbehaving.
The signature is easy to see under the microscope, waxy sleeve like collars wrapped around the base of the lashes. Once you know the sign, the diagnosis takes seconds.
This is why years of lid scrubs disappoint people. Wipes clean the debris, but they rarely clear mites living down at the root, so the itch keeps coming back.
The good news is recent. There is now a prescription eye drop developed specifically against this mite, and combined with in office deep cleaning of the lash line, the overgrowth can genuinely be cleared.
It connects to dry eye too. The overgrowth inflames the same lid margin where your tear oil is made, so clearing the mites often calms the tear film as well.
If your eyelids have itched for years, ask us to look at the lash bases. The check takes thirty seconds, and this is no longer something you just live with.
