Most chronic dry eye is evaporative. The oil glands along the eyelids fail, tears evaporate too quickly, and drops alone just keep replacing water that keeps escaping. IPL dry eye treatment aims at the glands instead.

Along the edge of each eyelid runs a row of tiny oil glands, the meibomian glands. Every blink presses a whisper of oil onto your tears, the seal that keeps them from evaporating. This is the machinery the treatment protects.

Intense pulsed light is not a laser. It closes the tiny abnormal blood vessels that feed inflammation at the lid margin, gently heats and thins the blocked oil, and reduces the mites and bacteria living at the lash line.

One number makes timing matter. Glands that scar and drop out do not grow back. Treating while your glands are still alive protects what you have, and that is the whole argument for acting earlier rather than later.

IPL is a course, not a single zap. A standard course is four short sessions spaced over several weeks, and then maintenance is guided by how your glands actually look on imaging, not by a calendar.

Honest expectations. Across clinical trials the measurable signs improve consistently, tear film stability and gland function. How much better you feel varies, and IPL works best alongside lid hygiene and drops, not instead of them.

IPL is not right for everyone. Skin type, medications and certain conditions rule it out, and we screen for all of that before recommending it. If it is not your answer, we will say so and use the tools that are.

If drops have never quite fixed your dry eye, ask whether yours is evaporative. Imaging your oil glands takes minutes and tells us whether light based treatment would help.
