At Eyecare Center of Orange County, Dr. Alexander Bonakdar has cared for patients for more than three decades. Trained at Bascom Palmer, board certified, and trusted by more than ten thousand Orange County patients since nineteen ninety one.
Myopia control starts with one fact. Short sight is the eye physically growing too long, and every year of extra growth stretches the retina thinner. This is a structural change, not an inconvenience.
Ordinary glasses are correction, not control. They focus today's blur perfectly and do nothing at all about next year's growth. A child in simple glasses usually needs stronger ones every year.
The stakes are lifelong. Higher myopia raises the adult risk of retinal detachment, of myopic damage to the macula, and of glaucoma. Every diopter prevented in childhood lowers those odds for the next seventy years.
There is a window. Myopia progresses fastest between roughly seven and twelve, so control started early prevents the most growth. Waiting to see how it goes spends the years that matter most.
Three treatments are proven to slow the growth itself. Overnight ortho K lenses, special soft lenses worn in the day, and low dose atropine drops. Used well, each slows progression substantially, on the order of half.
We do not manage this by prescription alone. The number that matters is axial length, how long the eye actually is, and we measure and chart it directly, the way height is charted.
Myopia control belongs at the front of the conversation, not the end of it. If your child's prescription grew again this year, ask us about slowing it, not just correcting it.
