You can read every line on the chart and still leave the screen exhausted. Eyes can be very slightly misaligned while seeing twenty twenty, and holding them in line is constant muscular work.

The trigeminal nerve is the largest sensory nerve to the head. It carries feeling from your face, your scalp, your neck and shoulders, and from the muscles that aim your eyes.

When misalignment keeps that pathway firing, the overload has a name, visually induced trigeminal dysphoria. It can mimic or worsen dry feeling eyes, headaches at the front of the head, neck tension and shoulder pain.

This is why lubricating drops alone often fail these patients. If the nerve loop is producing the dry sensation, wetting the surface treats the wrong end of the wire.

We measure it rather than guess. An instrument tracks exactly how your eyes aim, at distance and at near, down to fractions of a degree.

The correction is called contoured prism. Your misalignment at distance and at near are usually different, and these lenses correct each zone by its own amount, something ordinary flat prism cannot do.

With the alignment corrected, your eye muscles stop over exerting, and the constant stress feeding back into the trigeminal system quiets. That is the relief patients describe, the background noise switching off.
