Ultraviolet exposure is cumulative. Every bright day adds a little, and it builds across a lifetime rather than doing harm in one go.
It contributes to cataract. That link is well established, and the risk rises with the total exposure you have had over your life. Doubling a lifetime of exposure roughly raises the risk by half again.
A dark lens is not the same as a protective one. Look for UV four hundred. A dark lens without UV protection actually opens the pupil and lets more ultraviolet in.
Children need protection most. They spend more time outdoors, and the lens inside a young eye is clearer, so more ultraviolet reaches the back of the eye.
Ask us about UV protection, including prescription sunglasses and clear lenses that block ultraviolet.
